Leave The Layers Alone is a community group based in Saxmundham, Suffolk.

Its purpose is to persuade the County and District councils to deny planning permission that puts at risk the integrity of rural East Suffolk.

In particular, we aim to preserve the land between Saxmundham and Benhall, The Layers. This unique landscape has, for centuries, played a vital role for the town, initially as a place to lay up stock before market, as a venue for the Suffolk Show, and latterly as an open space of beauty and recreation for all people nearby.

It also played a vital role in the success of the D Day landings, providing a site for the testing and development of several armoured vehicles.

LTLA is not against new housing in Saxmundham.

do, however, want to ensure that it is:

•supported by the necessary infrastructure

•carefully integrated into the town

•planned to avoid coalescence, or the joining of Saxmundham to nearby villages

•designed with sensitivity to the impact it may make on the historic areas of our town

•affordable

•supportive of amenities (like the High Street) which already exist

We are vehemently apposed to the patronisingly-named ‘South Saxmundham Garden Neighbourhood’ which has been misleadingly and, we contend, unlawfully conceived.

WHY THE LAYERS MATTER

As far as anyone knows, The Layers get their name from their role in providing a place for traders to 'lay up' their livestock on the way to market in Saxmundham.

Given that Saxmundham gained its market licence nearly 700 years ago, The Layers have been an important part of the locality for a very long time.

Since the livestock market moved from the town in 1987, The Layers have remained an important landscape and part of East Suffolk's heritage.

Rich with flora and wildlife, they offer unrivalled views of two of the area's listed buildings, St John's Church and Hurts Hall.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

If The Layers are to be preserved for future generations, all those in nearby communities will need to play a part.

The most important thing we can do is communicate to the people that influence planning how much

this historic landscape means to us.
